State High School Champion Coach Encourages Men to Own their Decisions
Georgia State Championship winning coach Greg Vandagriff and WordCrafts Press are pleased to announce the release of his inspiring memoir, The Power of the Patch, which released to retail on February 6, 2025. The book quickly struck a nerve with fans debuting on multiple Amazon.com category best-seller charts, including climbing to both the Number 2 and Number 4 positions on the Hot New Releases in the Sports/Football category in the paperback and ebook versions respectively.
“Early on, I just felt so ill-prepared to be a dad, and I believed that there had to be other dads out there that felt the same way,” Coach Vandagriff explains of his reasons for penning his inspirational memoir. “As a result, my desire was to encourage other men to stay the course and dare to make a difference in their own kids’ lives.
“As men, as dads, we need to own our decisions and the directions we choose to go. Picture being on a road trip with your co-pilot in the passenger seat. As you get further down the road, the GPS shows you a wreck along your route. You’re coming upon it quickly. You may ask your co-pilot if they believe you should take the alternate route the GPS suggests or stick with the main route, believing the congestion will clear up soon. It’s an immediate question requiring an immediate answer.
With the pressure of the question, your co-pilot may have a few different reactions.
1. “Does he expect me to make the decision for him? I don’t want that responsibility. What if I make the wrong choice.” So he says nothing.
2. “I have not been paying attention! I can’t make that decision!” So he pleads the fifth.
3. “I think you should stay/take the exit.” The co-pilot has been paying attention and has an educated opinion.
“In these everyday, ordinary, commonplace occurances, the Scripture comes to life, and we can proclaim with assurance along with the writer of 2nd Corinthians that we are always of good courage for while we are at home in the body we walk by faith, not by sight. It is the author’s fervent prayer that each each of these devotionals may open your heart and mind to God’s extraordinary presence in the ordinary of your life’s journey.”
From the Book
To truly understand someone’s story, we need to know how it all started. Context always helps. It’s hard to go much farther back for context than birth. We all have a father, or a sperm donor as some may consider. My father, Jerry, was married to my mother for about four or five years. Then my mother introduced us to our first stepfather, Alan, who invaded our home straight from Vietnam. He drank scotch on the rocks every day and beat the fool out of my mom for about three years. Male influence No.3, Larry, seemed to be a better guy who was into hunting and fishing. I was excited as I’d never had the chance to do those kinds of things and, as a child, I really enjoyed it. However, Larry had his own demons, and you will hear about that soon enough. The fourth inside-the-home male influence, Jim, was introduced later in my life, when I was 19 or 20, and by that time, I was out of the home for the most part.
So, you can see how I arrived at that place of internal questioning when we were expecting our first child. With the track record of fathers in my life, of course I felt ill-equipped and wondered how to figure this fatherhood thing out. No one can solve this puzzle of fatherhood on their own. When you don’t know what constitutes a good functional family, but you do know what it takes to conjure up a dysfunctional one, how can you navigate the mine field of decision-making without destroying the home you are trying to build?
In my opinion, you must start with the man in the mirror. Do the internal work to determine those morals, values, and ethics that are worth passing on to your children.
