Before “The Chosen” became a global phenomenon, Dallas Jenkins introduced audiences to “WHAT IF…,” a story of second chances, faith, and the life you were meant to live. Frank Capra’s 1946 “It’s a Wonderful Life,” was the inspiration behind this modern-day heartfelt movie of second chances. Now, 15 years later, Jenkins partners with Fathom Entertainment to bring this timeless story back to theatres for a special two-night anniversary event on August 5 and 7.
Nominated for 4 and winner of 1 Grace Award, “WHAT IF…” was directed and produced by Dallas Jenkins, with a screenplay by Cary Solomon, Chuck Konzelman, Andrea Gyertson Nasfell, and produced by Michael Scott, Russell Wolfe, and David A.R. White. “WHAT IF…” stars Kevin Sorbo (Hercules), Kristy Swanson (the original Buffy the Vampire Slayer), John Ratzenberger (Cheers), Debby Ryan (Insatiable) and Taylor Groothuis. This was the first faith film for Jenkins and for Kevin Sorbo—an early signal of the impact Jenkins would later make on global faith audiences.
About “WHAT IF…”
“WHAT IF…” follows Ben Walker (Kevin Sorbo), a businessman who, years before, had abandoned his faith and left his hometown of Clearville for a successful life in the big city. One day, 15 years later, Ben wakes up back in Clearville, living the life he was destined for—married to his college sweetheart Wendy (Kristy Swanson), a father of two daughters (Ryan and Groothuis) and serving as a small-town pastor. Ben’s only explanation of what has happened to him is from Mike (Ratzenberger), an angel working for Peterson’s Auto.
The production values for “WHAT IF…” are good. The location (filmed mostly in Michigan) was beautiful. The script was good, with some thoughtful moments. Jenkins’s direction was strong as was the acting. Sorbo and Swanson’s portrayals of Ben and Wendy as a husband and wife going through ups and downs were believable. Ratzenberger was wonderful as Angel Mike, with some great one-lingers. Ryan’s and Groothuis’ portrayals of Kimberly and Megan was spot-on; they could have been real-life sisters.
“WHAT IF…” is a sweet, heartfelt movie. Although inspired by It’s a Wonderful Life, the movie is different from Capra’s classic. Instead of losing a massive amount of money and considering taking his own life, Ben has everything he wanted; living in the big city with lots of money stuff. Instead of sweet Clarence Odbody, Angel Second Class recusing George Baily, this film has Angel Mike explaining the whats and whys to Ben. Instead of surviving the aftermath of World War II, Ben’s life in Clearville—which he questions whether it’s real—is , with a happy family, friends, and church life.
With a run-time of 1 hour, 50 minutes “WHAT IF…” is rated PG for some thematic elements.
From start to finish, “WHAT IF…” is a heartfelt movie with a strong message of what is truly important in life. Get your tickets today and be sure to take tissues…you will need them.
