When Calls the Heart “Heart and Home” releases to DVD

When Calls the HeartFrom celebrated author Janette Oke (The Love Comes Softly series) and Executive Producer, Michael Landon Jr., comes Heart and Home, the fifth episode in the When Calls the Heart series set in the Canadian frontier, starring Erin Krakow (Army Wives), Daniel Lissing (Eye Candy), Jack Wagner (Melrose Place) and Lori Loughlin (Full House, 90210).

Jack (Lissing) and Elizabeth (Krakow) leave Hope Valley and rush back to the city of Hamilton when they learn that Jacks’ brother, Tom (Max Lloyd Jones), was involved in an automobile accident with Elizabeth’s sister, Julie (Charlotte Hegele). But Tom and Julie are hiding something about the incident, a deceit that puts Jack and Elizabeth at odds with their families and with each other. Their trip is further complicated when Tom and Julie endeavor to run off together and Elizabeth’s father offers Jack a job: an offer that puts Jack and Elizabeth’s fledgling romance in peril yet again.

This series is a popular one of best-selling author, Ms. Oke. In When Calls the Heart, Heart and Home, fans will enjoy catching up on the latest escapades of their favorite characters; wondering whether Jack and Elizabeth will choose between believing their siblings or believing each other; and whether Jack is truly interested in the pretty nurse who was caring for Tom. There is the additional story line of the railroad possibly coming through Hope Valley and what that will mean for the residents of that community. The script and story fit a safe-for-the-whole-family demographic and gives parents opportunities to discuss telling the truth and making right choices with their children.

The production values leaves something to be desired. The set is too pristine, for instance using clean gravel rather than dirt and mud covering the streets of Hope Valley. This gave the show more of a theatrical stage feel rather than movie set. The inconsistency and historical inaccuracies of the costumes and hair threw me off.

Directed by Neill Fearnley and released by Word Films, When Comes the Heart, Heart and Home has a run time of 84 minutes. It is now available on DVD.
