“THE MAN WHO INVENTED CHRISTMAS” is a magical holiday gift

Quote the simple phrases, “Bah, humbug” or “God bless us everyone” to just about anyone in the English-speaking world, and they will know exactly from what story those lines were taken. Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol,” with its iconic characters Ebenezer Scrooge, Bob Cratchit, and Tiny Tim, has—for nearly two centuries—set the standard for the holiday, inspiring the spirit of the traditional Victorian Christmas and birthing many customs still practiced today.

Produced by Mazur/Kaplan Company, The Mob Film Company, Parallel Films, Rhombus Media and distributed in the U.S. by Bleeker Street, THE MAN WHO INVENTED CHRISTMAS, is based on the book by Les Standiford’s. Directed by Bharat Nalluri (Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day), with the screenplay by Susan Coyne (“Mozart in the Jungle”). The film stars Dan Stevens (“Downton Abbey,” “Beauty and the Beast”), Christopher Plummer (“The Sound of Music”, “A Beautiful Mind”), and Jonathan Pryce (“The Man Who Killed Don Quixote,” “Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl”).

Dan Stevens as Charles Dickens in THE MAN WHO INVENTED CHRISTMAS

After a string of successful novels, world-renowned writer Dickens (Dan Stevens) has had three flops in a row. With the needs of his burgeoning family and his own extravagance rapidly emptying his pockets, Dickens grows desperate for another bestseller. Tormented by writer’s block and at odds with his publishers, he grasps at an idea for a surefire hit; a Christmas story he hopes will capture the imagination of his fans and solve his financial problems. But with only six weeks to write and publish the book before the holiday, and without the support of his publishers – who question why anyone would ever read a book about Christmas – he will have to work feverishly to meet his deadline. Dickens locks himself away to write, but his chaotic household, which now includes his profligate father (Tony® winner Jonathan Pryce), is a constant distraction. Working late into the night, the writer channels his own memories to conjure up the ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Yet to Come, and place them on a collision course with the misanthropic miser Ebenezer Scrooge (Oscar® winner Christopher Plummer).

THE MAN WHO INVENTED CHRISTMAS is a masterpiece on all levels. The production values are amazing; the looks and sounds of Victorian England—from the opulence of the rich to the squalor of the destitute—are vivid and detailed. The musical score by Mychael Danna (“Life of Pi,” “Little Miss Sunshine”) is appropriate to the genre, enhances the enjoyment of the film.

But looks and sounds would be nothing if the screenplay and acting were sub-par. And, in this film they are stellar. Susan Coyne’s screenplay brought such realism to Dickens’ writing journey. Writers of novels and plays will empathize with Dickens’ technique of integrating real-life characters, dialogue, and situations into his stories. They will nod their heads at the whimsy of Dicken’s inspiration showing up at all times of the day or night. They will groan at his pain and struggle with writer’s block.

Dan Stevens as Charles Dickens and Christopher Plummer as Ebenezer Scrooge in THE MAN WHO INVENTED CHRISTMAS

The actors took Coyne’s screenplay and brought it to fully-fleshed life. Leading a stellar cast, Dan Stevens was spectacular as Charles Dickens. He portrayed the novelist as almost bi-polar. One moment he is kind; exuberant and funny; a loving husband, father, and friend. The next moment he is rude; dejected; sad; pushing aside friends and family. Jonathan Pryce portrays John Dickens as sympathetic and pathetic. Christopher Plummer embodies Ebenezer Scrooge as everything Dickens wrote the old miser to be.

Filled with love, laughter, humanity, and goodwill, THE MAN WHO INVENTED CHRISTMAS is a magical holiday gift and destined to become a Christmas classic.
