Relativity Media announced this week that they will be distributing the new adaptation of the timeless Shakespearean tragedy ROMEO & JULIET.

RandJAdapted by the Oscar winning writer Julian Fellowes (Gosford Park) and directed by Carlo Carlei, the film stars the Oscar nominated Hailee Steinfeld (True Grit) and Douglas Booth (LOL) as the iconic star-crossed lovers. ROMEO & JULIET is a co-production of Amber Entertainment, Echo Lake Entertainment, and Swarovski Entertainment.  Relativity will distribute the film nationwide in a moderate release on September 6, 2013.

The ultimate romantic story, traditionally told in a renaissance setting, Romeo & Juliet shows us love at its purest and tragedy at its most fateful. Having been decades since its last representation through film, Romeo & Juliet offers a new generation the opportunity to savor and cherish literature’s most enduring romance.

Producing are Ileen Maissel, Lawrence Elman, Julian Fellowes, Nadja Swarovski, Simon Bosanquet, Alexander Koll, Dimitra Tsingou, Doug Mankoff and Andrew Spaulding. The screenplay was written by Julian Fellowes.

“We are so pleased to be working with Relativity on this special film,” said Echo Lake’s Doug Mankoff.  “The company’s success at reaching young audiences makes them a natural fit for the film’s release in the U.S.”

Nadja Swarovksi, Chairperson of Swarovski Entertainment and member of the Swarovski Executive Board commented: “Swarovski Entertainment Ltd is thrilled to work with Relativity on the distribution of its first feature film “Romeo & Juliet” in the United States. The film provides a platform of creative expression from the script writer, director, producer, costume designer, as well as established and emerging cast, which is line with Swarovski’s mission to support creativity across a multitude of business fields and support young artists across all creative disciplines.”

The film was financed by Swarovski and the Blue Lake Media Fund. The filmmakers were represented by UTA’s Rena Ronson and attorney Miles Mogulescu.
