MURDOCH MYSTERIES, CADFAEL prove that forensic sleuthing isn’t just for modern detectives

Fourth season of “Murdock Mysteries” and the complete collection of Cadfael available on Blu-ray and DVD.

If you enjoy watching a good crime mystery, but prefer it without excessive violence, language and sex, you’ll love Murdoch Mysteries, Season Four and Cadfael: The Complete Collection, released from Acorn Media.

Combining the period appeal of Sherlock Holmes with the forensic fascination of CSI, Murdoch Mysteries, Season 4, debuts on Blu-ray and DVD. Based on the characters from award-winning author Maureen Jennings’ Detective Murdoch novels, the acclaimed Canadian series has garnered 25 Gemini® nominations to its credit, including Best Writing and Best Dramatic Series.

Set in Victorian-era Toronto, this series follows Yannick Bisson (Sue Thomas: F.B.Eye) as Detective William Murdoch as he pushes the boundaries of criminal science to solve the city’s most baffling murders.  Season 4 pits the kindhearted Detective Murdoch against a would-be vampire, a costumed killer, and ruthless mobsters, inspiring him to whip up a slew of innovative crime-fighting techniques along the way.

This is a wonderful series, combing compelling stories with stellar acting. Bisson portrays Detective Murdoch with the brilliant deduction of Sherlock Holmes, the logic of Mr. Spock and the courteous manners of Hercule Poirot.  Craig is delightful as Inspector Brackenreid and Harris is equally as entertaining as Constable Crabtree. Bringing the feminine touch to these mysteries Hélène Joy portrays Dr. Julia Ogden, the young doctor whom Murdoch secretly loves. Her portrayal blends a brilliant mind with the struggles women of that period for women who if they wanted to be more than a wife and mother.

The set and costumes of this series bring the period to life as does the script. There are no anachronisms, language or cultural practices out of sync with the time period.

The series guest stars Victor Garber (Alias, Titanic), Simon Williams (Upstairs, Downstairs), Peter Keleghan (The Red Green Show), and Canadian prime minister Stephen Harper in a cameo.

CADFAEL: The Complete Collection

Since I first saw him as the stammering, crippled Claudius, I have been a fan of the Emmy®-winning actor, Sir Derek Jacobi. Whatever the role, Jacobi claims the viewers’ attention with fully-fleshed, rich portrayals. He brings this skill once again as Brother Cadfael.

Once a Crusader, now a man of the cloth, the worldly but humble Brother Cadfael uses his keen intuition to protect the innocent and bring the guilty to account in war-torn medieval England. Sir Derek Jacobi (I, Claudius; Gladiator) gives a captivating performance as the crime-solving monk in this award-winning series. With historical costumes and set, this award-winning series brings the Dark Ages to life. Also starring Julian Firth and Michael Culver, with guest stars including Julian Glover (By the Sword Divided), Sean Pertwee (Cold Feet), Hugh Bonneville (Lost in Austen), Tara Fitzgerald (Brassed Off), Jonny Lee Miller (Trainspotting), Toby Jones (Infamous), Anna Friel (Pushing Daisies), and Stephen Moyer (True Blood).
