Dark Is Coming

With her impending EP, Dark is Coming, singer/songwriter Rachel Ann Weiss (not to be confused with actress Rachel Weisz), might be the new poster child for anti-cool.

PromoImageForget the emotionless, sterile, ultra-cool, never let ‘em see you sweat mentality that pervades 21st century culture. In both her lyrical expressions and vocal interpretations, Weiss wears her soul on her sleeve, and if that’s not cool, well that’s okay too.

The first thing that strikes me about the three songs on Weiss’s latest EP is the remarkable breadth and depth of musical styles. Weiss delivers the just-short-of-funky jazz number, “Always Too Something,” with a sassy Billie Holiday vibe that wouldn’t be out of place in a 1920’s Harlem nightclub. Weiss shifts into slinky-dress mode on “Microphone,” a sultry, sensuous lounge singer number that could just have easily been sung by either Adele or Diana Krall. My favorite tune on the project is the more laid back, acoustic gem, “Dark is Coming.” Something about Weiss’s fragile vocals and vulnerable lyrics pierce the soul with a quiet yearning. At once tender yet achingly beautiful, I can see “Dark is Coming” becoming a signature song for this rising star.
