A CHILD IS BORN is a beautiful graphic novel of the Christmas Story

The story of the Nativity has been shared in many mediums, from live Nativity scenes to songs to books and film. Now, award-winning author/filmmaker/illustrator Billy Tucci – known as a ‘rock star’ of superhero comics – uses his art to share the story of Jesus’ birth in the graphic novel, A CHILD IS BORN.

Visually, this graphic novel is breath-taking. Colorist Paul Mounts, Bill Tortolini (letters) and Mark Sparacio (who painted the cover) join Tucci in creating a beautiful work. The detail in each picture is meticulous and historically realistic.  The infant Jesus looks like a real human baby and not some larger-than-life superhero baby seen in the works of the masters. Drawn as a giant muscular being, it’s easy to see why the angel Gabriel’s first words to the shepherds were, “Fear Not!”  The colors throughout the graphic novel – from the cover art to the final frame – are rich and breathtaking.

However, for many believers, visual detail and color mean nothing if the story does not line up with Scripture. This is not the case for A CHILD IS BORN. The story is based on the birth narratives in the gospels of Matthew and Luke and extra details that make the story flow are respectful of Scripture. Beyond Scripture, Tucci spoke with Biblical scholars.

In addition to the story, the graphic novel includes two bonus features. In one, Tucci shares his journey to writing A CHILD IS BORN, including being motivated by his wife’s victory over breast cancer. The second bonus is a note from Rick Larson, whom Tucci used as a resource in the book. Larson’s presentation “The Star of Bethlehem” reveals the history and science – including Johannes Kepler’s three Laws of Planetary Motion  - that proves the Star was a real event.

The first release from Apostle Arts A CHILD IS BORN would be a great book for those who love graphic novels or those who loved the real story of Christmas.
