THE BRUSH GUARD: An Inexpensive Way to Protect Makeup Brushes
When I was a teenager in the 1970s, makeup was applied mostly with fingers, cotton swabs, and a powder puff. The only brushes I used were the little one that came with the eyeliner or the one in the mascara tube. Since both were replaced every time I bought new makeup, it never occurred to me to clean them.
Today, I use powder mineral makeup and I own nearly two dozen different makeup brushes for applying foundation, concealer, shadows, highlights, blush, eyeshadow, eyebrow, finishing matte and lipstick. Properly caring for these brushes keeps my skin healthy, makes my makeup look prettier, and prolongs the financial investment in these tools.
The challenge comes when it’s time to wash the brushes; or rather dry them. You’re not supposed to lay round brushes flat, as it affects the shape. You’re not supposed to place them handle-side-down in a cup or glass to air dry, as the water can seep into the handle and soften the glue that holds the bristles. And obviously you’re not supposed to place them bristle-side-down in a cup or glass and squash the bristles.
I tried balancing the brushes on the edge of the sink, with the bristles hanging over the sink. However, the least little movement – such as walking across the floor – would jostle the brushes and several would roll into the sink.
I called my friend Shelly Ballestero, who is a licensed esthetician, make-up artist, beauty contributor, and author of Beauty by God. Normally, when I ask Shelly for makeup/skin care advice, she gives me several options. This time, she simply responded, “The Brush Guards.”
The Brush Guard is the invention of Diane Baker and Malcolm Plant. The Brush Guards are sheathes made of a flexible and breathable material. Slip The Brush Guard over the freshly washed brush’s handle and bristles and then stand them bristle-side-down so the water flows away from the bristles. Once they are dry, leave The Brush Guard on to protect the brushes while storing. They also provide an extra grip while using the brushes.
The Brush Guard comes in four different sizes and are available in variety or single size package choices. Their low price (which includes tax and shipping), makes it easy to buy several packages, to use for your own brushes and to give as gifts to friends and family.
